Violence-hit areas of Darjeeling district: Army Control

The Army was being deployed in violence-hit areas of Darjeeling district once 2 persons were killed on Tuesday when the police opened fireplace to prevent Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporters from eliminating a march in adjacent Jalpaiguri district defying prohibitory orders, sparking arson by GJM employees who torched government vehicles and offices.

“From tonight, the military can undertake flag marches in all the affected areas of Darjeeling district, together with Kalimpong sub-division,” extra District Magistrate (Darjeeling) Rajat Kumar Shaini said.

He said the administration is additionally considering imposing curfew within the violence-affected areas.

Clashes broke out at Shipchu within a reserve forest in Jalpaiguri district when the police dismantled illegal temporary camps found out by GJM activists, IG (North Bengal) Ranbir Kumar said.

Soon once the police action, GJM supporters tried to march towards the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri district where prohibitory orders underneath Section one hundred forty four CrPC were in force.

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee spoke to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram apprising him of the incidents because the Centre assured the state government that it'll offer extra security forces to manage the violence.

Union Home Secretary Gopal K. Pillai said in New Delhi that the Centre has already sent three hundred paramilitary personnel and one hundred girls security guards to help the state police forces to tackle true in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling.
