It is farmers’ festival, Harvest festival and particularly referred to as the festival of Tamils. Clad in new dress members of the family gather in the front yard of the house. The pot to use, the rice to cook accompanied by milk, ghee, sugar, sugar-cane are all new.




The end- product also known as ‘pongal’ begins to over-flow people standing around exuberate with shouts ‘pongolopongal’. The first submission is to SUN god.



It could be described as a kind of a ‘thanks-giving’ by the farmers for all the bounties bestowed on them. This festival celebrated on the 14th day of every January stands as evidence for the glorious culture and hospitality of the Tamil people particularly the farmers.
