Sangham or the Institure for the growth of Tamil language existed in three phases. The first one was at Madurai devastated by sea and the intermediary one in Kapadapuram and the third one also was in Madurai. This is described as the Golden Period of Tamilnadu. The corner-stone of Tamil language, dealing elaborately with its grammar –Tholkappiam - belonged to the last Sangha period. Classic works like Ettuthohai and Pathupattu also belonged to the Sangha period not to mention the world famous Thirukkural and the twin epics Silappathikaram and Manimehalai. When Aristocracy was the order of the day three kings namely Chera,Chola, Pandian ruled three different parts of Tamilnadu. During the period between the third and ninth centuries when Pallavas ruled Tamilnadu is considered to be the most glorious in all respect. It is said that the world famous traveler Marko Polo visited Tamilnadu during the rule of Kulasekera Pandian I in the year 1268 AD.
